School Lunch, News Cast Club, & SMASH

School Lunch

Typically, school lunches in the U.S. aren't exactly the best.  I grew up eating DallasISD school lunch, and I think because of that I feel super blessed with the "school lunch" here.  Teachers at Brasília International School benefit daily from the lunch served at school.

Everyday this month, I have been eating lunch with a different one of my students.  During this time, I have gotten to learn more about them, their families, their culture, etc.  Since most of them are either international students, as in, not from Brazil, or transfer Brazilian students, they are typically pretty new to BIS, so I ask them a few questions:  How are they transitioning?  What do they miss about their home country?  What do they like about Brazil?  What do they like about BIS?  What their favorite subject is at BIS?  Etc.

The other day, I had lunch with one of my students.  Here is our conversation:

Me:  So, What is your favorite subject here at BIS?

Student:  Well, I really like math, because I am pretty good at it.  But, I think my favorite class is Bible.

Me:  Cool!  That's probably mine too!  Why do you like it so much?

Student:  Well, really it's because they didn't teach it at my old school in the U.S.  I had never learned anything like that before.  I had never heard about Jesus or God because they didn't teach it to us.

Praise God for this moment.
Praise God for my students.
Praise God.

News Cast Club

This quarter, I began teaching News Cast Club after school on Wednesdays.  This past week, I taught the kids how to use iMovie.  We made a video of the kids saying their weekly Bible Verse and they kids practically made it all by themselves. It was really cool to see 8, 9, and 10 year olds splitting and editing video clips, and putting them together to make this video!  Check it out!

SMASH
From April 13th to 15th, I went as a Rec Leader and Small Group Leader with International Baptist Church to their annual S.M.A.S.H. Retreat (Students Making A Stand for Him).  Jeff and Taylor came from Clearwater Community Church in Birmingham, Alabama to lead the teaching and in worship.

Jeff taught about the Righteousness of God using the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, in Luke 18:9-14.  He taught about how we like to claim our own righteousness based upon our own works, puffed up with pride. Yet, in our own unrighteousness, we attempt to attain righteousness through our claims of what we are and what we are not, and by clinging to our own "righteousness," that we can't and don't have, again, on our own, proves our unrighteousness.  In doing this, we claim that we have attained something from our own works, robbing God of His Glory.

Rute e Eu (Lydia and I)
"Have mercy on me, a sinner."  The Tax Collector was humbled in the presence of God's righteousness.  It is in this state of humility in which we see God and His righteousness, and beg for mercy.  Recognizing our need for God's righteousness leads to humility, confession, and repentance, while claiming our own righteousness leads to arrogance.

I don't want to be a thief of God's glory.  I want to give it all to Him.
